Tax Reform Includes Imports

Tax Reform Includes Imports.
They argued Citrus Department advertising promotes only Florida OJ, and thus the tax unconstitutionally forced them to benefit their competitors.
Knowledge gained by research would theoretically benefit domestic and foreign growers, although researchers often get patents and other restrictions on using their ‘intellectual property.’
The commission on Wednesday voted 11-1 in committee to ask the Florida Legislature next year to make the tax change. Michael Haycock, the vice president of operations at Tropicana Products Inc. in Bradenton, the state”s largest processor and a major OJ importer, voted against the tax in committee but changed his vote in the commission”s regular session later.
If the Legislature enacts the tax change, it could go into effect as early as July 1.more

Advertising Police Arrive Inside Second Life

Advertising Police Arrive Inside Second Life.
ERSP is part of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, the National Advertising Division and the National Advertising Review Council, voluntary bodies which impose discipline on wayward — often crazy — advertisers. The decision is its first on advertising in Second Life.
IM — whose icon is an awesome blind Lady Justice with a traffic radar coming out of her head – made other patently nonsensical claims for its spray can:
Avoid costly unjust traffic tickets! Make your car invisible to traffic cameras This spray will make your car invisible to traffic cameras. It will hide your license plate from red light cameras Red light cameras are about revenue, not safety! Become a dealer and earn 300% + ROI I made over $21,000 in less than half a day!
In a dead giveaway, IM had already been cited and banned by the state of Pennsylvania.more

Business Franchising - An Overview
Posted on January 30, 2009
The term franchising refers to a process in which a person agrees to pay for a part or all of the business strategies of an existing company. As a concept franchising has been around for hundreds of years although it wasn’t until the 1950’s that it became more widespread. As its popularity grew so did its creditability and so now business franchises represent a significant part of the UK economy.
What is Franchising?
Probably the most basic form of business franchise is product and brand name franchising. In this type of franchise a person agrees to pay for the right to use a particular brand name or to sell a type of product. The franchising company creates and markets the brand before selling it to franchisees.
More common than simple brand name franchise agreements are business format franchises. This type of agreement involves a much broader relationship between the franchising company and the franchisee. The franchisee pays for the business, operating and marketing strategies of the franchise. Also likely to be included in the arrangement is initial training and ongoing support to help the franchisee to achieve maximum success.
What are the benefits of Franchising?
The reason that franchising has become popular is that the agreement has potential benefits for both the franchising company and the franchisee.
For a person who wants to manage their own business franchising can offer a simpler route to success. Starting a new business can be a complex process however by buying an existing franchise many of these difficulties can be avoided. A key benefit for the franchisee is that they are buying into an existing brand with a known customer base and operating strategies already established. It is likely that marketing campaigns will have already taken place and the costs of any future marketing will be shared between the franchising company and each individual branch of the franchise.
Additionally many if not all franchises provide on-going training and support to their franchisees. For people without prior experience of running their own business this can be a particularly attractive feature of the franchising process.
The main advantage for businesses choosing to franchise is that it allows for a quicker expansion of their company than may otherwise have been possible. A further benefit is that a large part of the usual day to day running of each branch is delegated to the franchisees.

Cable TV facing triple whammy as recession hits US economy

Cable TV facing triple whammy as recession hits US economy.
In terms of advertisers, when facing hard times, most companies cut back on their advertising and marketing budgets before trimming any other business expense.
Savvy executives know that”s cutting back sales efforts in any business is counter-productive, because what a struggling venture need to do more than anything is to generate revenues. Even so, the cable operators right now are seeing lots of ad contracts either cancelled or scaled back.
So, cable operators now must respond to the recession by working closer than ever with current and potential advertisers to counter the trend of fewer ad dollars being available. They need to argue the business case of spending money to make money, which seems counter-intuitive to many advertisers.
In terms of cable vendors, when facing hard times, cable operators may choose to downgrade, defer or cancel plant maintenance and improvements, such as converting to switched digital video (SDV) or upgrading to tru2way set-top-boxes, let alone investing in new test and measurement equipment.more

Home Business Success - Can the Internet Be the Answer For You?
Posted on January 28, 2009
Ahh, the good ‘ole days. Where the good old days really that good? Well…yes, in some ways the old days were great, ranging from well-made cars and appliances to homes, clothes, and an old thing called “Job Security”.
I think we all will agree that the days of working 40 years with a company and retiring with a hefty pension are long gone. More and more people are looking for ways to hedge their “security bet”, or replace their current J.O.B. (Just Over Broke) with a home business income. One revolutionary asset to this day and age is the tremendous power that the internet provides to someone who wants to start an online business.
For ages, most businesses followed a similar model. During the start-up phase, great lengths would be taken to build a business plan. Next, vast measures to obtain loans were exhausted to fund the costs of initial inventory, sales literature, advertising, insurance (both health and liability for the company), commercial rent, and much more.
Upon securing such funding, which typically required you to co-sign over everything you own, you were now ready to operate. How would you obtain your customers? Typically you would resort to local news papers, radio advertising, and/or television advertising. It is easy to see why vast funding was needed and how it could be exhausted rapidly with traditional business models.
Today, we welcome the amazing power and potential which the internet provides the home business entrepreneur. With well-developed affiliate programs, you can implement an established, proven business plan. Often, starting a home based internet business can be done with several hundred dollars, rather than several thousand dollars.
The largest benefit, however, is the reach that one has to a vast and tremendous audience on the internet. You now have an opportunity to sell your home business products to shoppers on a global level. Millions of people are online shopping at every moment of the day, and the cost to reach these shoppers is a fraction of the cost of traditional radio, television, and newspaper advertising efforts.
A word of caution…most people FAIL online. Sobering words, huh? In fact the failure rate is over 95% and one of the primary reasons is the same that makes an online business so lucrative! How can that be?!
You see, since it’s so easy to get started, people often fail to use basic business planning and good sense when they launch their business. Most have no idea how they are going to market, let alone set aside an adequate budget. I see it all the time…People are lured to this industry, expecting to hit it big without learning the ropes.
Rule number 1…you absolutely MUST learn a few key aspects about the online business world and hook your wagon to someone who knows what to do. Preferably some one who will hook you in to an entire network of people who know what they’re doing and are willing to help you as well. (YOU are in the right place and I’m looking forward to helping you!
OK…some basics. To begin making money from a home based Internet business, you need to maintain a minimum infrastructure. An internet connection, a budget for advertising and possibly web design, and, of course, a reliable computer.
If you have conducted your due diligence research on a business opportunity and have your advertising plans ready, you are well on your way to building a successful future as a home based internet entrepreneur.
With the power of the internet at your disposal, you can quickly and effectively ramp up an online business and actually begin earning revenues that same day. It is common for a home business owner to put up a simple web page, or get started with an opportunity that provides most everything to get started…websites, landing pages, auto-repsponders, and other tools of the trade.
All this is great but it’s like planting a bill board in the middle of the desert if you don’t have adequate, reliable advertising sources to power your business engine. I’ll plug you you into some of my tried and tested programs and ad sources, plus show you what you need to do to really be successful with these “turn-key” systems. (There’s much more to it than what they lead you to believe.)
So Plug in and turn on! There IS a global audience of shoppers and people out there looking for a way to use the Internet to make money. With our help, you’re poised to Plug In and Turn On to your world wide venture.

Phorm is out to alter world of online advertising
Posted on January 28, 2009
Phorm is out to alter world of online advertising.
Kent Ertugul, its founder, modestly promises to revolutionise online advertising through software that monitors where people surf.
Phorm has been investigated by the City of London Police, who decided that its technology did not warrant further investigation; it has won approval to operate after a separate inquiry by the Department for Business; and it has been forced to revise its privacy policies. It has allayed the official concerns, but Phorm”s share price crashed, dot-com style, from £35 in February to 200p on Monday.
Working with the internet providers BT, Virgin Media and Carphone Warehouse, Phorm aims to show you advertisements that you want to watch based on the sites you visit online. Not everybody wants to be monitored, but after a 10,000-person trial, BT said this week that it would go ahead, on the proviso that its internet subscribers would be able to opt out.more

Business Plans For Entrepreneurs
Posted on January 27, 2009
Few areas of business attract as much attention as entrepreneurship, and few aspects of entrepreneurship attract as much attention as a business plan. Increasingly, business plan competitions are springing up across the world, partly helped by the marketing gimmicks of business schools. Indeed, judging by all the hooplas surrounding business plans, you might want to ask yourself what happen to all those eventual winners, many of those MBA graduates would no doubt went on to work in investment banks, drawing huge bonuses managing venture capital and private equity funds rather than taking the uncertain path of entrepreneurship.
Nothing could be further from the truth, in my experiences with the hundreds of entrepreneurial startups, business planning persistently ranked as one of the least important aspects of entrepreneurship. In fact, most wasted too much time and effort on numbers rather than actual implementation and the more elaborately crafted the documents, the more likely the venture would flop. Don’t misunderstood me, business plans are necessary for the eventual entrepreneur to soul search and clarify to himself his actual thought process, address unforeseen issues and to analyze likely market competitions and potential structural changes.
There are plenty of existing business plans templates you can google on the Internet. On will provide an automatic formula for winning. Rather, business plans are meant to be temporary and subject to changes all the time. There is no need to follow the execution plan step-by-step. Rather, the general strategy should comprise of the following three core of interdependent factors critical to new ventures:
a) People - The people starting and running the startups. Without the right people, nothing else really matters. “I invest in people, not ideas”, is the famous saying of Arthur Rock, a legendary venture capitalist associated with the likes of Apple and Intel. The men and women involved should also include third parties providing key support and resources to the venture.
b) Business Profile - The profile of the business itself. Selling the right thing is a battle half-won. These include questions like who will be the expected buyers, how fast can the business grow and what factors stand in the way. The business owners need to be specific on where the source of income is going to come from.
c) The Big Picture - Social and technological evolution that are beyond the control of any entrepreneurs. Imaging trying to sell pagers 10 years ago. For this particular factor, would entrepreneurs must prepare to eventually cut their loss and stopped their businesses or switched to another products and services should situations changed. Many successful ventures adapted to new market environment and were in very different lines when they first started. This is also where a shift in market environment can turn an unattractive idea into a highly profitable ones.
Good business planning is like a video show into the future, and discuss people, business profile and the big picture as a moving target. Be prepared to tear up the original plan and go back to re-write it as you move on.

Portland advertising agencies do a sales job for survival
Posted on January 27, 2009
Portland advertising agencies do a sales job for survival.
Oregon advertising firms have evangelized on everything from sneakers to computers. But, as economic gloom spreads, they”re redoubling efforts to market themselves.
When companies slash budgets, they often start with advertising — a reality confirmed this week by projections that U.S. ad spending will fall 3 to 9 percent next year, to about $160 billion.
The forecasts didn”t surprise many Portland-area agencies, who say clients are already cutting back. To compensate, many firms have reduced or reorganized staff and redirected money from radio, TV and newspapers to the Internet. And now there”s added pressure to prove advertising pays off, even with American consumers reluctant to spend.
Agencies have to keep up or risk extinction, says Jamie Sexton, director of the Portland Advertising Federation.more
