Not shy or retiring, Harvey dreams on

Not shy or retiring, Harvey dreams on.
His company buys an enormous amount of advertising, but he gets an incalculable amount free.

How much? ‘Lots, lots,’ he says.

‘I don”t mind the media, and realistically it”s good for my business. You”re out there and you plug your business.’

But Harvey says he only ever tells it as it is. ‘I figure that if you do that, then you”re going to build a reputation of “even if it”s bad, he”ll tell you”.’

He”s even turned the economic downturn to his advantage by deciding to release sales figures weekly for the 170-odd franchised Harvey Norman shops across Australia. The chain is No. 1 in technology products, furniture and bedding.

‘We are in every town that counts and we are the barometer, it is telling you what”s happened today, not what”s happened in the past,’ he says.more

Christmas: A Sprig Of Mistletoe For The Occasion

Christmas: A Sprig Of Mistletoe For The Occasion.
Santa”s helper, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, began life as an advertising stunt for the Montgomery Ward department store in Chicago. Robert May, an advertising copywriter, suggested an illustrated poem in a printed booklet could be distribu ted b y the department store for families to keep and reread. May composed the poem and an artist friend, Denver Gillen, created illustrations of shinynosed reindeer at work and play. However, store executives told May the reindeer”s original name, Rollo, just wouldn”t work. At his four-year-old daughter”s suggestion, May substituted the name Rudolph. Rudolph first appeared at Christmas 1939.

In 1947 Johnny Marks, another friend of May, put the poem to music. For the next two years, professional singers consistently declined the opportunity to put Rudolph”s career in song, but in 1949 country-western artist Gene Autry recorded the tale of the red-nosed reindeer.more

Google to Weather 2009 Better than Yahoo.
Barring another Microsoft (MSFT) run at acquiring all of Yahoo, we believe that the downward pressure on the online-advertising market, and display advertising in particular, will be worse than the market expects, and will lead to another challenging year for Yahoo in 2009.

All aspects of Yahoo”s business will be challenged to grow in 2009, as CPMs (cost-per-thousands), CPCs (costs-per-click), sponsorships, and user fees may all come under pressure in this difficult macro environment.

As consumer spending comes to a halt, retailers, marketers and …

Open a Dollar Store - Are You a Take-Action Person?

Posted on February 7, 2009

Have you ever met someone who seems to have an endless list of ideas? Every time you see that person they throw out still more new ideas? Yet they never seem to do anything with those ideas? They just get lost over time. If you are about to open a dollar store don’t allow yourself to fall into that same pattern.

Having ideas when you open a dollar store is great. However, it is what you actually do with those ideas that is important. What you do with your ideas can make the difference between business success and business failure.

Not every idea will work for you after you open a dollar store. In some cases the timing will be wrong. Possibly you are already in the midst of another change. Possibly you are just entering the business holiday season. Major changes cannot effectively be made during the holidays.

In other cases it might be a situation where you cannot manage the financing that is required. The cost is high, and you don’t have the money. Delaying those changes may be the best decision when you open a dollar store. However there will be many changes that have the potential to positively impact your business. The cost isn’t high. All they are waiting for is you taking action.

Are you ready to open a dollar store? Then recognize the changes that can help your business to succeed and grow. Many of the changes cost little and require little time and effort. Yet they can make huge positive impact on your business. Be sure that your lack of action isn’t the reason change doesn’t happen.

Conducting 21st Century Business - A Shark’s Tale

Posted on February 6, 2009

Business: it’s like a vast ocean filled with vicious Great Whites. Let me begin by saying I am not the shark. I am the bitten; the one who got chomped on the back side after 12 years with a great company. I suppose this happens when you go swimming with sharks. But the thing that threw me was the smiles. All the sharks were smiling. But why? We’ll get to that in a moment.

With the possibilities now available on the internet, it no longer makes sense to swim with the sharks. In corporate business, the sharks always win. On the internet, you’re in charge. That’s an exciting prospect: being in charge. It’s a wonderful feeling spinning at the center of your own vortex. The internet is a sea of opportunity. That could change in another decade, but for now the possibilities are endless. You can communicate virtually with the world on a whim. Billions of people are out there waiting to hear from you. All you have to do is make a little ripple in the pond and wait for the after-effects. It’s similar to the Butterfly Effect but on a worldwide scale.

Now let’s get back to the sharks; the big fat ones who swim around in the corporate business arena like they own the ocean. Problem is, they probably do own a part of the ocean. And you don’t. That’s why the sharks are smiling. They are owners so they feel more secure. And if times get turbulent, they can simply cast off some dead weight and continue with business as usual. Wow. How does it feel to be dead weight?

This is the 21st Century. The old 1950’s business model of your father going to work in his Buick and returning home to the family and a hot meal on the kitchen table is dead. Job security no longer exists in this post Howdy Doody world; not in the traditional sense. Today, if you want job security, you have to build it yourself. You have to be your own salesman. You have to go out and get it. And that means work. A lot of it.

You can shape your own destiny with research, hard work, and the proper guidance. Sure, if you’re looking to start your own online business you’ll have to put in a few hours a day like a traditional corporate business, but you’ll be an owner. You’ll be the one with a smile on your face; especially when the profits start rolling in.

As the old saying goes, “There’s no time like the present”; because tomorrow, the sharks could eat you.

If you’re tired of swimming with corporate sharks, discover the perks of being your own boss at your own business. Find out more by visiting our website: 21st Century Business
