No cooling off for ice cream business.
Catalano is planning to advertise the Ice Cream Smuggler a bit more this year, and Warren is keeping a closer eye on costs at Four Seas.
Furthermore, if tax increases are enacted, they could cut into revenue, Warren said.
The prices Four Seas lists on its menu already include tax. And if taxes went up, Warren would keep the cost for the customer the same by lowering the underlying price of a cone.
Approaching Memorial Day weekend, most ice cream sellers said that their stores” performance during the informal kickoff to the tourist season probably won”t provide much indication of how the rest of the summer will go.
‘It”s an event, as opposed to all of July and all of August,’ Davis said. ‘I wouldn”t rest on the fact that if we”re busy on Memorial Day weekend we”ll be busy all summer.’
Weather, the ice cream shop proprietors said, is easily the biggest factor in determining the success of the summer.more

Organizer Sherry Tosovsky said the 25th anniversary coupled with the wayward economy forced them to advertise aggressively.’We really stepped up our marketing,’ she said. ‘We promoted a lot more.’She said the goal is to spark community involvement and have fun, although it doesn”t hurt if they turn a profit, especially given the recession.’It”s not the first priority,’ she said. ‘But we usually do make some money.’This year, it”s likely the trend will continue, Tosovsky said. Neighbors will always turn out to support their community, she said, regardless of money worries.’We”re expecting a bigger crowd,’ Tosovsky said. ‘We should.’Nungesser, whose Belleville catering company handles hundreds of events each year, said her experience proves the theory. Following the 28-day trial - which is estimated to be costing Smith about 75,000 - Smith hopes Ofcom will re-advertise the licence and Coast will bid for it. There are many ‘ifs’. If the regulator re-advertises - maybe in July or August. And if Smith is successful in bidding for the licence - there are no guarantees he will win - the radio station may be up and running permanently this time next year - ‘with a fair wind,’ according to Coast managing director and radio veteran Kevin Stewart. If it seems a bit of a flier, it is the sort of thing that Smith excels at. For Smith has a habit of taking the unlikely option and turning it into gold. In the early 1990s, for example, no-one thought his game show Who wants to be a Millionaire? would succeed. Not even Smith himself. Tom Cohn: A few of the touchy areas are endorsements, testimonials, and any third party statement used to advertise and promote — such as blogs, discussion boards, chat rooms, and forums. Any third party statements must reflect the honest reflections and findings of the endorsers. Those statements can”t contain any representations that are deceptive or that can”t be substantiated by the advertiser.
The FTC hasposted revisions to its endorsements and testimonials guide that came out in 1980. At the last minute, they stuck in new issues concerning new media marketing. One example [they provide] is a video game expert. He”s a blogger who publishes about games, who got a free game from a company for review. According to the new proposed guidelines, he should have disclosed that he got the game for free.more

If marketers succeed in their wish to have their advertising only on certain shows, that seems likely to raise ad pricing on some shows, while pushing it down on others. Which ones would go up and which ones would go down is hard to tell at this point.
Want your ads inCBS”sblue-chip’CSI’? Then you”ll have to run some in’Harper”s Island.’ Eager to get your message to the devotees of ABC”s ‘Lost’? Then you”ll have to buy some time during untesteddebutantes such as ‘Cupid.’
That”s how it”s worked for decades. Marketers and their media buyers are forced to agree to TV networks” condition that they take ad positions across entire schedules if they want to be in the hottest shows. Marketers” patience with this system is, however, running out, and many are pushing harder than ever before to buy programs and not networks.more

It may pay off to put away the plastic.
TRISH WEXLER: This amendment would remove all sort of enforcement about how merchants advertise their cash discount.
Wexler says retailers could advertise the cash price, and then hit shoppers using credit cards with a higher price at the register. Shoppers pay about $48 billion a year in interchange fees.
