US online advertisers scramble to avoid new privacy legislation.
The US advertising industry has drawn up guidelines for online advertising in an attempt to avoid legislative action over controversial behavioural targeting practices.
Privacy groups have condemned advertisers for using technologies such as Phorm which track online users” browsing habits and then use the information for targeted marketing campaigns.
This form of advertising has raised privacy concerns because it leads to the creation of large databases of personal information.
The guidelines are in response to a warning from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that it would step in if the industry did not control how online advertisers collect and use personal data.
The guidelines call for internet companies to inform users how their data is being collected and give them the chance to opt out.more

Anyone else in favor of 16-hour school days?

Anyone else in favor of 16-hour school days?.
Advertise your sale in this newspaper, if you want the best results. I bring up this subject because of this message I received the other day from a faithful reader, who signed her letter: Mrs. Arch Stanton: ‘I had a garage sale in Ligonier on Friday, April 17. I hung several signs on telephone poles around town on Thursday afternoon. By 7:30 am Friday morning, they had all been taken down. I know the rules say not to hang garage sale signs on telephone poles, but I had seen several signs up so I thought what was good for the goose is good for the gander. Guess not. I guess it was OK for a church to leave their signs up for 10 days. I have seen plenty of garage sale signs hanging on pole, some way past the day of the sale. Let”s treat everyone the same.’ OK. Everyone straight on this deal? Good.more

Amazon vs. the States over the Advertising Tax.
The advertising tax issue was discussed this afternoon on Fox Business. Shibani Joshi talked about Amazon.com?s war against the various state plans to institute Internet advertising taxes.
The segment was just a few minutes, so it didn?t go too in depth on the issue, and it was mostly about the impact on Amazon.
There was no discussion on the countless affiliates in affected states who are basically being fired from their jobs.
This is very significant, as those affiliates will not only produce less taxable income, but they may well end up on the unemployment line, depending on how much they rely on Amazon and other affiliate programs that drop them.
The segment included a comment from Forrester Research Inc analyst Sucharita Mulpuru?
?It?s a double-edged sword? Affiliates are nice to have but by no stretch of the imagination are they going to make or break Amazon?s Web site.more

Leach”s new job another step in atypical career

Leach”s new job another step in atypical career.
In his congressional campaigns, he turned down money from political action committees and rejected TV advertising from the national party when he thought it wasn”t fair to his opponents.
Still, he won election after election until 2006, when Cornell College professor Dave Loebsack challenged him with a simple theme: Leach might oppose the Iraq war and support abortion rights, but his election would help Republicans maintain control of Congress.
Many considered Leach”s loss a shocker, but Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said there was little the congressman could do in a Democratic year.
‘A lot of people thought Republicans lost their way on fiscal matters. He wasn”t one of those,’ Grassley said. ‘There was just such a sweep … I think he would still be an effective congressman.more

Pioneer Press cuts 11 jobs

Pioneer Press cuts 11 jobs.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press laid off nine employees in its newsroom Tuesday and two in advertising and sales production, according to news reports.
The layoffs are estimated to save the Pioneer Press about $800,000 a year, according to a report in the Minneapolis Star Tribune. MinnPost blogger David Bauer also reported the news, citing a Facebook entry by former Pioneer Press copy editor Andrew Pritchard, who said he was one of the ones cut.
Cheryl Burch-Schoff, a Pioneer Press newsroom delegate to the Newspaper Guild labor union, declined to comment.
The cuts will trim down the Pioneer Press’ current 131-member newsroom and the 74-employee advertising staff. The paper laid off about a dozen workers earlier this year, citing the weak economy.more

Need an extra job? Map your skills, be creative.
If you are good with figures, why not advertise the fact that you can help people who have asked for an extension on their income taxes.
Whatever you choose, get creative about getting the word out. Business cards are relatively inexpensive and can be posted on places like retail message boards. For a few dollars more you can advertise in the local newspaper.

Beyond the Gateway Recession: What CEOs Will Face Next

Beyond the Gateway Recession: What CEOs Will Face Next.
You used to advertise in the local newspaper, BusinessWeek, CNN, Le Monde, or the Wall Street Journal. Many of these channels won”t survive in the new era — because the new consumer won”t pick them up or tune them in. You will have to reach customers in new ways — blogs, Facebook, Google, Twitter, and whatever supersedes them. The way you innovated is dead. The era of black-box innovation has passed. Look to P&G for the new model. CEO A.G. Lafley searches for product ideas all over the world — competitors, customers, China, and India — then partners to bring the new innovation to market. The biggest change will be the involvement of customers in building your products — a concept that I call ’social sigma’ (with apologies to Six Sigma). The idea is that the customer, through social technologies, will spec the new product — that the customer will be an active participant in broad aspects of product development.more

Google AdWords Disallows Advertising for Abortion Businesses in

Google AdWords Disallows Advertising for Abortion Businesses in.
Pro-abortion activist Lori Adelman corresponded with a staff member at Google who confirmed the denial of abortion advertising.
While ads for abortion are allowed in many nations, such as the United States, Google appears to have banned them in countries such as Brazil, France, Mexico, Poland, and Taiwan.
While nations like Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Poland protect women and children, others such as France and Taiwan allow abortions.
‘Last September, we reviewed our abortion ads policy in order to make sure it was fair, up to date and consistent with local customs and practices,’ the staffer told Adelman. ‘We decided to disallow ads for abortion services, such as abortion clinics, in the following markets: Germany, Poland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, France, Italy and Spain.’
‘However, general, factual ads on abortion continued to be allowed and we also enabled religious associations to place ads on abortion in a factual way,’ the Google staffer said.more
