Brian Tierney”s Crusade to Rescue Philadelphia”s Papers Faces Deadline.
In 2006, Mr. Tierney led a $515 million buyout of the Inquirer and Daily News, betting his advertising experience and local connections could revive them.
Mr. Tierney sliced almost $100 million from annual operating costs that stood at $461 million in 2006. He cut nearly 400 of the company”s 2,600 full-time-equivalent jobs and persuaded unions to ease work rules. He also replaced most of the papers” ad-sales staff, ended cut-rate subscriptions and started a glossy magazine to attract luxury-goods ads that the company says brings in $1.5 million in annual revenue.
But like almost all papers, the Inquirer and Daily News have been slammed by the shift to the Internet by advertisers and readers.
The Philadelphia papers” combined ad revenue fell to $279 million in 2008, down 22% from 2006.more

Brown-Forman Corporation F1Q10 (Qtr End 07/31/09) Earnings Call

Brown-Forman Corporation F1Q10 (Qtr End 07/31/09) Earnings Call.
Our underlying operating income benefited not only from underlying top line growth but also from lower advertising promotion and selling, general and administrative costs during the period. Specifically on advertising and promotion expenses, we believe the reductions were primarily a result of three factors. First, the quarter benefited from seasonal shifts of advertising and promotion investments. This year we plan to allocate a higher proportion of our brand spending to the September, October, November and December periods. Secondly, as I mentioned before we continue to reallocate expenses among activities within advertising. For example, savings from lower spend on media, on-premise promotions, PR and special events such as NASCAR were partially reallocated to lower cost, off-premise activities to drive top line growth.more

PCWORLD : No amount of advertising will fix Windows Mobile 6

PCWORLD : No amount of advertising will fix Windows Mobile 6.5.
It basically said that no advertising agency on earth could solve this one. Granted I am somewhat biased as it”s the only Microsoft product that I like, as my Samsung Blackjack II runs Windows Mobile 6.1. I have Google Maps, Nimbuzz for Chat and Skyfire as my browser as well as an FTP client and a text editor. I can do about 95% of my job from just my phone (if bandwidth speeds are ok).
Now it may not be as ‘cool’ as an iPhone, but at least I have a full QWERTY keyboard. But that”s mostly the hardware, the Windows Mobile platform does have some serious bugs, like it tends to ‘lock up’ and other times it prompts you to install X so you can run Y. The problem is however is that Microsoft did the same thing with Mobile as it did with Search, it ignored it. Whereas even Google Android is now catching up to it in market share (for good reason, Android is a solid Mobile OS that is opensource)
It”s reached the point where some are stating that Microsoft should just abandon the platform.more

NEWSROOM * CIRCULATION * ADVERTISING

NEWSROOM * CIRCULATION * ADVERTISING.
I am a wife and mother of two (Brookfield born and raised) home-schooled children. I enjoy writing simple poems and other expressions about household chores and daily life. This simple act adds perk and pleasantry to my well-trodden routine.
I also ‘tolerate with good humor’ camping, fishing and boating. Activities pertaining to lakes are always full of interest and adventure. At home, I enjoy gardening (except for the weeding) and feeding the birds. I”ve never heard a bird complain about the dinner selection.

Ad slump pushes Independent News & Media into the red.
‘The group”s current forecast presumes a continuation of poor advertising markets to year-end, with no material pick-up from the trend experienced in the first half, save seasonal trends in the run-up to Christmas,’ he added.
‘Accordingly, and dependent on no further deterioration in advertising conditions, the group forecasts operating profit before exceptionals for 2009 to be at the lower end of the range provided in June 2009 of 180m (160m) to 210m.’
INM also announced this morning that that it has sold its South African outdoor advertising business, INM Outdoor, for just under 100m in cash. The company is also hoping to offload its German price comparison website Verivox by the end of the year.
The advertising downturn has forced INM to write down the value of its newspaper titles by 71.8.more

MEDIA: D&C uses contextual advertising online

MEDIA: D&C uses contextual advertising online.
‘We, like other media companies, have been using contextual advertising for well over a year now,’ said Jim Fogler, the Democrat and Chronicle”s vice president of marketing, in an e-mail. | Fogler wouldn”t offer further comment because the ads are part of the paper”s ‘revenue strategies,’ he said. | Contextual advertising works via a service that scans the text and places linked ads related to the content of the story. | That”s why mousing over the green underlined phrase ‘taking pictures’ that appeared in a recent D&C story results in a pop-up box advertisement for Blackberry phones - they have built-in cameras, after all. Clicking the link takes the reader to Blackberry”s website. | A number of other underlined phrases lead to search results via Microsoft”s fledgling Bing search engine. | Other Gannett papers also use the technology, though USA Today doesn”t appear to be one of them.more

Moonlighters journey to advertising stardom augments

Moonlighters journey to advertising stardom augments.
Few moonlighters actively search for a permanent place in the advertising sun after their first foray. They hope lightning will strike again but won”t go out with a lightning rod. Persson got a portfolio made and even a website, but after the initial thrill dissipated, so did the enterprise. However, there are those who won”t wait for a miracle.
Jimmy Cooper realised ads were a good. At 25 he got his pictures shot and took them around to production houses. ‘How else will you get noticed?”" questions the now 34-year-old who still keeps his night job at a BPO. Cooper has had close to 20 commercials on air, including Bajaj scooter, Cornetto ice-cream, Birla Sun Life and Kissan jam.
‘The day before, I auditioned for a Hyundai ad. The character is a Prahlad Kakkarlike director who yells “cut” comically when the lead, Shah Rukh Khan, daydreams during a shoot.more
